Ten Rules of the Birthday Wish by Beth Ferry, illus. by Tom Lichtenheld. Putnam, $17.99; ISBN 978-1-5247-4154-9. A series of animals demonstrate how to observe a birthday properly through 10 rules in this tale by the creators of Stick and Stone.

Eventown by Corey Ann Haydu. HarperCollins/Tegen, $16.99; ISBN 978-0-06-268980-1. In this thought-provoking novel, 11-year-old twin and experimental cook Elodee and her family leave behind an undefined sorrow for a new start in utopian Eventown. The book earned a starred review from PW.

Watch Us Rise by Renée Watson and Ellen Hagan. Bloomsbury, $18.99; ISBN 978-1-5476-0008-3. From Watson (Piecing Me Together) and poet Hagan comes a complex and socially conscious coming-of-age tale featuring young women of color.

Comics Will Break Your Heart by Faith Erin Hicks. Roaring Brook, $18.99; ISBN 978-1-62672-364-1. In her first prose story for young adults, graphic novelist Hicks (The Nameless City) explores feuding families, comic books, and love.

Pony Poems for Little Pony Lovers by Cari Meister, illus. by Sara Rhys. Beach Lane, $17.99; ISBN 978-1-4814-9814-2. Aren’t ponies the best? The apple-cheeked children in this collection of short poems certainly think so.

The Year I Didn’t Eat by Samuel Pollen. Yellow Jacket, $17.99; ISBN 978-1-4998-0808-7. Telling the story in a candid, often humorous first-person narrative, debut author Pollen draws a teen’s life and recovery process from an eating disorder realistically as a series of steps and setbacks.

Crown of Feathers by Nicki Pau Preto. Simon Pulse, $19.99; ISBN 978-1-5344-2462-3. Debut author Preto’s high fantasy series opener follows an orphaned girl who learns to harness magic animals.

Good Boy by Sergio Ruzzier. Atheneum, $15.99; ISBN 978-1-4814-9906-4. This picture book by Ruzzier (Fox & Chick: The Party and Other Stories) stars a boy and his exceedingly well-trained dog, and the comedy comes from the boy’s increasingly improbable commands. The book earned a starred review from PW.

Nick and June Were Here by Shalanda Stanley. Knopf, $17.99; ISBN 978-0-399-55658-6. When June has a mental health crisis and Nick faces a grave challenge of his own, the couple confronts their choices: stay in their stifling Arkansas hometown and deal with the consequences, or hit the road.

Spy Runner by Eugene Yelchin. Holt, $17.99; ISBN 978-1-250-12081-6. Yelchin’s middle grade thriller set during the Red Scare will entice readers who have an interest in history and intrigue. The book earned a starred review from PW.
